Join the Children’s Literacy Initiative at Volumes Bookcafe. There will be art, story-time, and a short demonstration on how best to read aloud to your children.
Fun for the entire family!
Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is focused on improving literacy instruction in public, charter, and parochial schools to ensure that students can read on grade level. Established in 1988 in Philadelphia, CLI began as the hope of a Philadelphia librarian. What started as an annual celebration of literacy and quality literature is now a nationwide educational non-profit that impacts the lives of nearly 95,000 students and 5,000 educators per year. CLI began working in Chicago Public Schools in 2006. Today, CLI is serving 1,275 students and 69 educators across ten CPS elementary schools located on the south and southwest side of Chicago. CLI’s program provides personalized coaching for teachers and principals, research-based literacy training, and the books and materials classrooms need so that students can become powerful readers, writers, and thinkers. Third-party research has shown that the CLI professional development model can improve educators’ early literacy instruction and student reading achievement. CLI was recently awarded The David M. Rubenstein Prize, the top honor in the Library of Congress Literacy Awards program for making an outstanding and measurable contribution to increasing literacy levels; and CLI has a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for accountability, transparency, and financial health.
