BOOKSTORE EVENTS MANAGER:
Depending on applicant preference - could be full or part-time position.
We are looking for an energetic self-starter who can rock our robust events programming at Volumes. While Volumes can host up to 300 events (both on-site, off-site, author focused or community focused) per year. This position will handle a portion of this event management, which is a lot. Essentially we are looking for a bookseller who can help take the reigns of a good % of our event planning and marketing.
We are a quirky independent bookcafe & bookstore with a focus on community, the literary community at large, and support of young artists. Each month we run a number of regular author-less events along with a great number of author events. We also host book fairs, school visits, book clubs, community meetings, and much much more.
We are looking for someone with great ideas, super organization skills, a willingness to take risks, and a passion for community building. This person needs to be organized and able to juggle an ever moving calendar and inbox. Must be personable and comfortable in working with and speaking in front of groups of people both small and large.
Basic Bookseller Duties include:
· Providing Friendly, Accurate and Consistent Customer Service
· Alphabetizing and shelving books, which includes:
Sometimes carrying boxes of books
Sometimes carrying books up and down stairs
· Keeping up to date on current popular books and forthcoming books.
· Keeping the bookstore clean. This means sometimes mopping, dusting, picking up after guests.
· Balancing the cash drawer.
· Staffing off-site author events and book tables.
· Taking and relaying accurate phone messages.
- Being trained in barista skills. Making a variety of drinks as needed.
Other Duties As Needed.
What We're Looking For in an Events Manager:
Priority is given to applicants who have worked with books either in a bookstore or a library.
Volumes serves a diverse community of readers. You should have an appreciation and respect for people of all races, ages, genders, sexual orientation, socio-economic class, etc.
Priority given to applicants with experience in event management and promotion
Extensive knowledge of: Facebook for business, Instagram for business, Twitter, Hootsuite, Eventbrite, Mailchimp, Canva or Adobe photoshop, drupal (or equivalent backend of web sites), IndieCommerce, Edelweiss, Google Drive..
Organized and professional applications with a passion for books/authors/artists.
Knowledge of setting up ticketed events (sometimes with 500-3000 attendees).
You should have a more than a general knowledge of basic computer skills. We'll train you to use our quirky inventory system, but it's best if you have a good beginning. Priority for applicants with experience with bookstore POS systems.
You should have a flexible schedule. Nights and weekends are important and a big part of this job.
Reliable transportation is a must. We are a small staff, and tardiness affects everyone on staff.

We're an independent bookstore, so you won't get rich working here. Our salaries are modest, but we do provide some perks to make up for it. This position starts at a minimum of $15 per hour with opportunity for commissions, bonuses and tips.
