Summer Youth Workshops
This summer, Volumes Bookcafe will be offering free 2-hour classes for children and teens aged 8-18 (see course description for details). All classes will take place from 10am to 12pm. Call us or email Jessey at firstname.lastname@example.org in order to reserve a space; there are 10 spots available in each class.
1. Budding Poet Day (Jessey) Sunday, July 10th - 10am-12pm
We all have a budding poet inside of us. Spend an afternoon with Volumes and learn all about rhyme scheme, odes, haikus and create all sorts of poems on your own!
2. Intro to Improv (Rivka) Sunday, July 17th - 10am-12pm
Spend the day with Volumes staff learning about stream of consciousness and the silly things we come up with when we aren't thinking too hard. We will play warm up games to get to know one another and generally have fun.
3. Intro to Improv (Kimberly) Monday, July 25 - 10am-12pm
Spend the day with Volumes staff learning about stream of consciousness and the silly things we come up with when we aren't thinking too hard. We will play warm up games to get to know one another. Great for students looking for a creativity confidence boost.
4. Make a Comic Book Day (Lane) Sunday, Aug 7th - 10am-12pm
The perfect afternoon for young artists/writers! Come join us for an afternoon of creating your very own comic book! Children will learn all about story arcs, character creation and have the opportunity to put together their own book! Art supplies and writing utensils will be provided, but feel free to bring your own, too.
5. Dear Diary (Erin) Monday, Aug 8th - 10am-12pm
Keeping a journal or diary is often dismissed as a personal or girlish act - but we think otherwise. This class focuses on the most effective ways to use your journal and the powerful tool for self-reflection and writing that a journal can become. We will look at acclaimed writers who have lauded the role their diaries have played, modes of journaling, and how to use personal writing as a way to enhance other forms of your writing.
6. Playwriting With An Eye On Narrative (Maddy) Sunday, Aug 14th - 10am-12pm
Take a stroll around the block and channel Harriet the Spy. We will be writing down fun things we hear and using them to create a short scene in our Intro to Playwriting class. We will also take turns reading each other's work and giving positive feedback.
7. Puppet Making and the Story (instructor TBD) Monday, August 15th - 10am-12pm
In this class we'll learn about our emotions and identify those emotions in characters of books we love. We'll create puppets whose colors and textures reflect the emotions of the book or the self. We will read more stories and play with our puppets as the teacher helps us write dwn the story we create with our puppets and classmates
8. The Poet, The Public, The Slam (Jessey and Rivka) Sunday, Aug 22 - 10am-12pm
Everyone has a unique point of view. Join us at Volumes to work shop your poetry and practice speaking to an audience. Learn rhyme, projecting and get over your fear of the mic. Safe space to be you and say what you need to say.
